The Waipoua Forest is located on the picturesque West Coast of Northland some 247kms north of Auckland. The famous Waipoua Forest is the largest remaining tract of native forest in the Northland, with towering trees and rare birds. Home of Tāne Mahuta, the country's largest kauri tree, which is approximately 2,000 years old and still growing. Known as 'The Lord of the Forest', the Tāne Mahuta is nearly 18 metres to the first branch and 4.4metres in diameter. Waipoua Forest is also home to many other tree species, podocarps and hardwoods.
