Bendigo was one of Otago’s original gold mining settlements and equally notable as a long running and successful quartz mining area. The settlement lies just 3 kilometres from the main road (Highway 8) and well marked paths will guide you to explore the remains of stone cottages and other buildings from this bygone era. Take care though as there are still some very deep open mine shafts. Access to the Bendigo Historic reserve is on an unsealed road and after heavy rain may be difficult to access in a car. Take care and check the conditions first.
