One Tree Hill, otherwise known as Maungakiekie, is one part of the much larger Cornwall Park. Situated at the centre of Auckland City, Cornwall Park was gifted to the citizens of Auckland by Sir John Logan Campbell in 1901. It was named for the Duke of Cornwall, who later became King George V.
One Tree Hill itself is just one of 48 extinct volcanoes that are scattered across the Isthmus. It last erupted between 20 and 30,000 years ago. Still evident on the hillsides, is the extensive terracing built during the Maori occupation of the site in pre - European times. Now, this substantial park provides a sanctuary from the high speed lifestyle that is part of Auckland city. The summit of One Tree Hill is easily accessible allowing delightful 360 degree views of Auckland and its surrounds.
